Semantic Web e la parola semantic…

Come regalo in questi giorni di festa, ecco una parte assolutamente comprensibile e inerente ai primi livelli dello stack del Semantic Web: un filmato di qc minuto da vedere…

In pratica si cerca di spiegare il termine Semantic, in modo che sia facilmente comprensibile e divisibile dalla sintassi con la quale comunichiamo, e nello stesso tempo si rinforza l’idea che si cerca di automatizzare alcune procedure delegate oggi all’uomo inutilmente molte volte.

Visto che siamo in tema, e anche nell’ultimo post ho citato le origini del Web, ed io stesso in questi giorni mi sto studiando meglio le sue fondamenta ( HTTP e uso corretto delle URI in particolare… ), ecco una presentazione recente ( novembre 2007 ), che ripercorre alcuni concetti del Web, sempre fondamentali:

Oltre a questo, aggiungo che e’ uscito il Draft per le linee guida sull’utilizzo delle URI anche in chiave semantica, frutto di una diatriba davvero complessa e con spunti notevoli negli anni…

URIs (Uniform Resource Identifiers) more simply called “Web addresses” are at the heart of the Web and also of the Semantic Web. Cool URIs for the Semantic Web discusses two strategies for choosing URIs for the Semantic Web, gives pointers to several Web sites that use these solutions, and briefly discusses why several other alternatives are less effective.

Nel frattempo, alla voce Conclusioni del Draft, sono presenti i punti focali della vicenda, che mettero’ comunque maggiormente a fuoco…

Resource names on the Semantic Web should fulfill two requirements:

  • First, a description of the identified resource should be retrievable with standard Web technologies.
  • Second, a naming scheme should not confuse documents and the things described by the documents.

We have described two approaches that fulfill these requirements, both based on the HTTP URI scheme and protocol.

  • One is to use the 303 HTTP status code to redirect from the resource identifier to the describing document.
  • One is to use “hash URIs” to identify resources, exploiting the fact that hash URIs are retrieved by dropping the part after the hash and retrieving the other part.

The requirement to distinguish between resources and their descriptions increases the need for coordination between multiple URIs. Some useful techniques are:

  • embedding links to RDF data in HTML documents,
  • using RDF statements to describe the relationship between the URIs,
  • using content negotiation to redirect to an appropriate description of a resource.

Post meta-fisico, vi avviso…

Forse di nessuna utilita’, ma mi piace pensare che il nostro spirito di esseri umani e’ molte cose in contemporanea, e nell’atto della comunicazione che facciamo costantemente, molto si puo’ far capire della complessita’ che pensiamo e che ci pervade ogni giorno.

E che siamo, di fatto.

Ogni giorno siamo online, usando Internet ed il Web, scrivendo URL che iniziano con HTTP e trattando con le RISORSE presenti nel Web, senza renderci quasi conto di quello che stiamo facendo, o se abbia un senso, o se ci porti da qualche parte.

Stavo riguardando qualche giorno fa l’inizio del film “A Beautiful Mind“, la storia romanzata di John Nash, genio incompreso e inascoltato per lo piu’ della nostra storia, ed e’ stato come un collage davanti agli occhi.
Vedere la sua voglia di concentrarsi sui problemi delle dinamiche dominanti, e lasciare le piccole cose e i particolari, a tutti gli altri, mi ha colpito.

Vediamo in che modo.

Il software e’ conoscenza, leggevo l’altro giorno: mai affermazione e’ stata piu’ vera.
Stiamo costruendo mattoncino su mattoncino, tecnologie al di sopra di idee che non appaiano a caso, ma Stando sulle spalle dei giganti, qualcuno ha detto una volta.

E’ una sensazione strana, e percepirla davvero fa sentire bene, fa essere orgogliosi di essere uomini…

E’ bello capire e sentire che le conoscenze che si studiano, che si leggono, che le tecnologie e il nostro stesso stile di vita, tanto imperfetto quanto condannabile, e perfettibile, e’ pur sempre il frutto di generazioni e generazioni di uomini che hanno contribuito con la propria passione e le proprie attitudini a sfidare il proprio intelletto, e a cercare di capire le regole che ci circondano.

Esplicite o meno che siano.
Misteriose e incompresibili a volte, ma pur sempre affascinanti.

Non sono le tecnologie, il singolo linguaggio o il singolo sistema operativo la Chiave di volta di tutto quanto: come tecnici sono infinite le guerre di religione che si combattono costantemente, ora a supporto di una o l’altra frangia, a ragione o a torto…

La realta’ e’ che ci si concentra forse troppo sul particolare, e non si lavora sull’insieme, dove davvero conterebbe.
Proprio come ha cercato di fare Nash, astraendosi sempre piu’ dal particolare, e dando vita cosi’ ad una delle idee e delle teorie piu’ grandi della nostra Storia.

Un video e l’Energia: ecco a che punto siamo…

L’energia e’ uno dei temi ricorrenti in questo blog, cosi’ come lo e’ nella mia testa…
A fasi alterne, in realta’, e’ un pensiero fisso da tempo.

Vorrei offrire due spunti importanti, adesso che vivremo qc giorno al freddo e al gelo ( e’ dicembre inoltrato, non mi pare nulla di strano,no? )

Dal sempre ottimo Petrolio, di Blogosfere…

E questa dichiarazione, dovrebbe essere trasmessa a chiare lettere in giro, GIRIAMOLA e creiamo davvero DOMANDA per quello che e’ il nostro presente e il nostro futuro…
Prendetelo come un piccolo APPELLO, che ci induca a riflettere e a DIVULGARE con chiarezza e semplicita’ la cosa…

-> Fatih Birol/IEA: “Il nuovo ordine energetico”.

Così, il nostro agente all’Avana di TOD è riuscito ad infilarsi allo Shell Centre a Londra per assistere ad un meeting con nientemeno che con Fatih Birol, capo economista e responsabile della divisione affari economici alla International Energy Agency. Quello che ha ascoltato è davvero sconcertante: eccone qualche estratto.

Siamo sull’orlo di un nuovo ordine energetico. Dal fronte dell’offerta, la produzione non-OPEC ha raggiunto il picco, cosa non buona per le compagnie petrolifere: saranno infatti le compagnie nazionali a determinare la futura produzione. Tra oggi e il 2030, Cina e India rappresenteranno il 70% della nuova domanda.

Continuando così, il futuro è dei combustibili fossili, con una crescita delle emissioni del 57% per il 2030 e un disastroso aumento della temperatura di ben 6 gradi.

E ancora:

Birol ha appena lanciato l’allarme sul picco del petrolio, ammettendo che il mondo sarà a malapena capace di rimpiazzare la perdita di produzione con nuovi progetti che solo un roseo ottimismo può dare per scontati entro il 2015.

Se consideriamo inoltre che il responsabile del crisis management della IEA, ad un’intervista televisiva, ha appena ammesso che la domanda ha superato l’offerta, capiamo che il massimo organismo mondiale dell’energia sta suonando campane e fischietti per farci intendere la situazione il prima possibile. O almeno, per farla intendere a chi di dovere. Che non siamo noi… ma chi deve capire, capirà?

E soprattutto, verrà almeno a saperlo?

Insomma, cosa facciamo, mettiamo la testa sotto la sabbia?
O ci tiriamo su le maniche?

Almeno sull’ultimo punto potremmo fare molto.

LinkSys Nas200 arrived…

Now i’m formatting the two 500GB hard disks ( two Samsung HD501LJ, take a look at Tom’s Hardware List, they are in a nice position )…

I have just configured as RAID1 without using the installation procedure, but as Ryan says, using the IP and the HTTP admin interface and NOT the EXE setup program [ having Ubuntu and MacOsX ], so easy .)

Like the NAS200’s packaging, the CDROM was neatly branded. I didn’t have high hopes for running the Setup Wizard, but I did give it the college try. From the command line, I navigated to the CD and typed “wine Setup.exe” and cringed as several error messages appeared in my terminal. I didn’t bother going any further with this. Knowing the NAS200 would be assigned an IP address via DHCP from my router, I launched Firefox and navigated to http://192.168.1.102. I felt a small measure of relief watching the NAS200’s administrative page load within my browser. This feeling was soon found fleeting as I attempted to log in. The default username and password listed in the manual did not work. A few curses later, I remembered the default login (admin / admin) used by my Linksys router and gave that a try. It worked.

Obviously, my IP is not this one .)
But one thing strange, when i powered it…

Dear Ryan! Thanks for your test! I am looking for a reliable and yet handy NAS. My impression is, that this field ist relatively new and therefore there are many products that are not fully developed.. let’s put it that way. However, the first impression of the LinkSys NAS200 was very good. (Open source firmware, feature set, etc.) There is one thing that kept me busy all night: After set-up as RAID1(all new, no existing data on any drive, etc.) and formatting the NAS200 starts a rebuild. See http://members.kabsi.at/losti/screen.JPG for a screenshot. The disc LEDs on the front panel flash alternatly. This makes no sense and can’t be abandoned etc. There IS no data to rebuild, so why?? The drives (ST3500630AS) get EXTEMLY hot and it would take a long time for this rebuild to complete (~5 mins per %). No RAID system (e.g. Promise TX2300) used before ever showed such behaviour. Did you experience this rebuild after set-up too or do I have defective unit? Your feedback (or of anyone else) would be highly apprechiated! Andi

I have the same problem as told by this comment, by the way it works fine now…
My disks weren’t so hot, but i don’t understand why rebuild RAID1 if there isn’t nothing to rebuild… Mah…

Anyway, now it works fine…

Main purpose: backup my data without any crap or configuration accross my LAN…
With the power of the Net .)
And the scalability of the Moore law in the Disk area… ( changing disks without changing the unit )

Testing with also an idea of RDF storage, maybe .)
